I started the lifestyle company Love And Develop Yourself, aka LADY, after graduating. Like a number of recent graduates, I found it difficult to find a job, so I decided to step out on faith and start my own business. Currently LADY provides apparel and accessories, which consist of graphic t-shirts, hats and totes bags. All products are shipped for free within the U.S.
Love And Develop Yourself is for YOU! It’s about finding peace and love within yourself. Most of all, its being respected for being a LADY, for your power, brains, talents, flaws and beauty. I started this company because I wanted to empower women and I didn’t like how women were constantly being negatively depicted within the media.
For example, fighting on television is a negative depiction of women that is constantly being portrayed. Truly mature adult women don’t solve issues with violence, they address issues by having a conversation. Today, a lot of women are re-enacting what they see on television when they have issues with other women.
I don’t know who to blame more, the consumer who watches these shows regularly or the executives who produce this type of television content. As consumers, have we been programmed and become accustomed to this type of material that we shouldn’t demand better quality program to watch? If you don’t like the content on a particular show don’t watch it. If you want to take it a step further, demand more higher quality content. And to make real change, hit these networks in their pockets. Networks make money based on ratings, it determines whether or not a show will have additional episodes or seasons. If ratings are low, hopefully shows portraying negative images of women will be canceled.
How can television executives, particularly women, just sit back and accept this? As we all know, women battle on a daily basis for equal opportunity in corporate America, as well as for pay. Although, each individual has the right to create the content they choose, I feel people should have a moral responsibility to create content that uplifts and portrays women in a positive light.
We need to produce not only television shows, but images of women, that are of substance and that show women in leadership positions and uplifting roles.
Before we can expect TV executives to do anything about the images of women, these are my tips to remember.
- Know your worth!
- Looks fade, but true and real beauty come from within.
- Never compromise yourself or your morals for a check.
- Have fun and enjoy yourself, but conduct yourself in a manner that wouldn’t embarrass your family.
Women, start making your Moves today!
